What is underpinning? Underpinning a foundation or basement is a technical process of strengthening and stabilising the ground and foundation, which could be an existing or new structure. This could range to any building structure size and shape, from single storey structures to multi storey. Underpinning is proposed when the original design foundation is failed due to the following factors. 

– Unstable ground or poor design to take the applied load or new load implication.

– Poor soil condition or ground erosion.

Methods Of Underpinning

The methods of underpinning a foundation could depend on various factors and extent of subsidence and structural cracks. It is always advised to follow ground report and structural design reflecting the underpinning methods. Following are few methods.

    Concrete Pour Underpinning

In this method, the ground or affected area is excavated to a depth of hard strata and concrete is poured with an agreed ratio to provide stability to the foundation and load taken.

    Reinforcement RCC underpinning

This method is quite similar to the above however reinforcement bars are added to concrete to provide better tensile strength to concrete. Concrete is good at resisting compression but fails on tensile stress hence, the addition of steel (cage or mesh composition) adds additional strength. Since it is below ground enhanced Fusion Bonded Epoxy coating RCC is used to provide great protection against corrosion and chlorine and excellent bonding with concrete.

    Piling underpinning

In this method, piling (either screw or sheet driven) is inserted into the ground till it reaches the hard ground. This process involves drilling piles to support the structure load.

    Resin Injection

In this method is quite popular due to its significant cost-effectiveness. It is an expandable material that is injected where access is limited. However it is advised to seek structural engineers design and consent on resin injection as it is not suitable in most structural load distributions due to unforeseen injection.

    Precast Beam Underpinning

This method involves precast beams and blocks being placed below the foundation where the ground requires support. However, this method is more modular and requires off-site build prior installed on site.
